About Sebastian Liste

Sebastian Liste is a documentary photographer and sociologist whose career spans more than two decades and whose work has crossed the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe. Born in Spain, he first encountered photography through hundreds of images his grandfather had taken while working across Latin American communities as an urban architect for the United Nations. That early exposure helped shape his interest in photography, memory, place and social structure.

He graduated as a sociologist, studied photography at the International Center of Photography in New York, and completed a master’s in documentary photography and photojournalism at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He later participated in the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass.

His approach to documentary work is built on sustained presence. Rather than parachuting into a subject, he spends years inside the communities he photographs, using the camera to understand how societies hold together and how they come apart. His long-term bodies of work reflect this commitment. Urban Quilombo was made inside an abandoned chocolate factory in Salvador de Bahia, where families had seized the ruined building and built a self-governed community. On the Inside was photographed within Vista Hermosa, a Venezuelan prison where inmates governed daily life while guards patrolled the perimeter.

Other major bodies of work include Bullets and Dogs, a decade-long project tracing how violence in Latin America shifted from an instrument of political power into a condition of everyday life, and Amazon, the Last Frontier, which follows years of work across the Amazon basin and now extends into the world’s remaining rainforests. His ongoing family project documents his own family over two decades, making it the only body of work in which he is a participant rather than a witness.

Sebastian Liste’s photographs have been published in National Geographic, TIME, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Le Monde, Stern, Paris Match, GEO, The Sunday Times Magazine and The British Journal of Photography, among others. His projects have been funded by the Pulitzer Center, the Magnum Foundation, the Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography and the Alexia Foundation.

He has received the Rémi Ochlik Award for Young Reporter of the Year at Visa pour l’Image, the Ian Parry Grant, a World Press Photo award, the Community Awareness Award at Pictures of the Year International, and the Lucie Award for young editorial photographer of the year, among other distinctions. His work has been exhibited at Visa pour l’Image in Perpignan, CaixaForum Museum in Madrid and Barcelona, Angkor Photo Festival, Pingyao International Photography Festival and Ring Cube in Tokyo. His photographs are held in permanent collections including the Elton John Photography Collection, the Sorigué Foundation and the Maison de l’Image Documentaire.

Alongside his practice, Sebastian Liste has taught for 15 years at universities, festivals and institutions worldwide, including World Press Photo, NOOR and Visa pour l’Image. Out of that experience, he founded PhotoDocumentarians, a mentorship platform and global community that guides documentary photographers through vision, editing, sequencing and the strategic work of bringing projects to publication, exhibition and funding.
